Rwanda essays

Rwanda essays In my opinion, Belgians have the biggest responsibility of genocide in Rwanda. Every thing started with Belgiums colonizatation. They did many horrible things to Rwanda and its people. Firstly, the first thing they did is the seperatation. Before Belgians come, there were many groups living in the country peacefully. There wasnt any ruler or a king there. However, Belgium, by this peacefully way they couldnt have reached their intention. Hence, they decided to set at loggerheads Hutus and Tutsis. Hutus and Tutsis have already been divided by their stereotypes. Conversely they were not enemies. Afterwards, Belgians made an identify card system, day by day which will become a hereditary thing. It helped Belgium to start a war between these two groups. It was known that Tutsis were known as the rulers and Hutus were the workers. Conversely there wasnt an enmity. And also being a Tutsi or a Hutu comes from having 10 or less cattle and having 10 or more cattle. Thus, their grandfathers designate their groups. I think that, it was the best way to start a war and now we can easily say that it was genocide. They made real separation because before Belgium there was nobody killing each other. Furthermore, when something become hereditary, nobody can change it. It was maybe the same as a rule but also it was more unchangeable than a rule. Hence, making something hereditary will be sometimes easy as we see in this example but break it we need hundreds of years. Secondly, they worked hand in hand with Catholic Church, which ran the schools. So that Huru children will learn Christian but Tutsis wont. Because they was known as race of Ham, one of the three sons of Noah. By that, they also started region separation I think. As a consequence, maybe Hutus didnt do anything to Tutsis in the past because of Tutsis region power. But now there is no handicap! It is becoming more and more important year by year . ...

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Quotes

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Quotes The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a supernatural tale by Washington Irving. Here are a few famous quotes from the story. Quotes The chief part of the stories, however, turned upon the favorite specter of Sleepy Hollow, the Headless Horseman, who had been heard several times of late, patrolling the country; and, it was said, tethered his horse nightly among the graves in the churchyard. I profess not to know how women’s hearts are wooed and won. To me, they have always been matters of riddle and admiration. Some seem to have but one vulnerable point, or door of access; while others have a thousand avenues, and may be captured in a thousand different ways. It is a great triumph of skill to gain the former, but a still greater proof of generalship to maintain possession of the latter, for a man must battle for his fortress at every door and window. He who wins a thousand common hearts is therefore entitled to some renown; but he who keeps undisputed sway over the heart of a coquette, is indeed a hero. On mounting a rising ground, which brought the figure of his fellow-traveller in relief against the sky, gigantic in height, and muffled in a cloak, Ichabod was horror-struck on perceiving that he was headless! – but his horror was still more increased on observing that the head, which should have rested on his shoulders, was carried before him on the pommel of his saddle! It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet. Local tales and superstitions thrive best in these sheltered, long settled retreats; but are trampled under foot, by the shifting throng that forms the population of most of our country places. Besides, there is no encouragement for ghosts in most of our villages, for they have scarce had time to finish their first nap, and turn themselves in their graves, before their surviving friends have traveled away from the neighborhood, so that when they turn out of a night to walk the rounds, they have no acquaintance left to call upon. This is perhaps the reason why we so seldom hear of ghosts except in our long-established Dutch communities. As the enraptured Ichabod fancied all this, and as he rolled his great green eyes over the fat meadow-lands, the rich fields of wheat, of rye, of buckwheat, and Indian corn, and the orchards burthened with ruddy fruit, which surrounded the warm tenement of Van Tassel, his heart yearned after the damsel who was to inherit these domains, and his imagination expanded with the idea, how they might be readily turned into cash, and the money invested in immense tracts of wild land, and shingle palaces in the wilderness. Nay, his busy fancy already realized his hopes, and presented to him the blooming Katrina, with a whole family of children, mounted on the top of a wagon loaded with household trumpery, with pots and kettles dangling beneath; and he beheld himself bestriding a pacing mare, with a colt at her heels, setting out for Kentucky, Tennessee, or the Lord knows where! Ichabod only lingered behind, according to the custom of country lovers, to have a tete-a-tete with the heiress; fully convinced that he was now on the high road to success. What passed at this interview I will not pretend to say, for in fact, I do not know. Something, however, I fear me, must have gone wrong, for he certainly sallied forth, after no very great interval, with an air quite desolate and chopfallen- Oh these women! these women! Could that girl have been playing off any of her coquettish tricks?- Was her encouragement of the poor pedagogue all a mere sham to secure her conquest of his rival?- Heaven only knows, not I! The mysterious event caused much speculation at the Church on the following Sunday. Knots of gazers and gossips were collected in the churchyard, at the bridge, and at the spot where the hat and pumpkin had been found. The stories of Brouwer, of Bones, and a whole budget of others, were called to mind; and when they had diligently considered them all and compared them with the symptoms of the present case, they shook their heads, and came to the conclusion that Ichabod had been carried off by the galloping Hessian. As he was a bachelor, and in nobody’s debt, nobody troubled his head any more about him, the school was removed to a different quarter of the hollow, and another pedagogue reigned in his stead. This neighborhood, at the time of which I am speaking, was one of those highly favored places which abound with chronicle and great men. The British and American line had run near it during the war- it had, therefore, been the scene of marauding, and been infested with refugees, cowboys, and all kinds of border chivalry. Just sufficient time had elapsed to enable each storyteller to dress up his tale with a little becoming fiction, and in the indistinctness of his recollection, to make himself the hero of every exploit. The schoolmaster is generally a man of some importance in the female circle of a rural neighborhood, being considered a kind of idle gentlemanlike personage, of vastly superior taste and accomplishments to the rough country swains, and, indeed, inferior in learning only to the parson. There was something extremely provoking in this obstinately pacific system; it left Brom no alternative but to draw upon the funds of rustic waggery in his disposition, and to play off boorish practical jokes upon his rival. It was a matter of no little vanity to him, on Sundays, to take his station in front of the church gallery, with a band of chosen singers; where, in his own mind, he completely carried away the palm from the parson. Certain it is, his voice resounded far above all the rest of the congregation; and there are peculiar quavers still to be heard in that church, and which may even be heard half a mile off, quite to the opposite side of the mill-pond, on a still Sunday morning, which are said to be legitimately descended from the nose of Ichabod Crane. Thus, by divers little make-shifts in that ingenious way which is commonly denominated â€Å"by hook and by crook,† the worthy pedagogue got on tolerably enough, and was thought, by all who understood nothing of the labor of headwork, to have a wonderfully easy life of it. The old country wives, however, who are the best judges of these matters, maintain to this day that Ichabod was spirited away by supernatural means; and it is a favorite story often told about the neighborhood round the winter evening fire.

Groups and teams Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Groups and teams - Essay Example All the activities were electrically related as the groups were required to design a digital invention for sale at the end of the semester. Two poorly functioning groups or teams were identified and denoted as team A and team B (Borkman). For the purpose of this assignment, the two poorly functioning groups or teams will also be denoted as team A and team B. This paper elucidates the multiple factors that caused the poor functioning of each of the two poorly functioning groups, draws a comparison between the two groups in respect to the conflict process in regard to the Tuckman’s framework or model. This paper also suggests a resolution to the conflicts and further elucidates why the resolutions will be effective. Team A It is of significance to posit that there is a range of factors that caused the poo functioning of each off the group. Team A was one of the teams involved in the project. In this group off seven members, Borkman posits that only four of the group members were unfailingly involved in the activities off the team. The other three members of the team failed to actively participate in the activities. One of the factors that caused the poor functioning of the team was leadership. Of the three constantly absent members of the group, one of them initially presumed a leadership role. This person’s name was denoted as ‘All Talk’ and was adopted by other group members. ... As illustrated by Tuckman in his model off development, a team or group ought to identify and recognize authority, as well as role and communication arrangements or organizations. In team A, all the members had divergent views and opinions on whether there were too many or too few individuals in positions of leadership. The members had also divergent opinions on whether the leaders within the team were legitimate or not. Secondly communication issues also cause the poor functioning of the team. In the forming stage, it was agreed upon that members of the group could either contribute through emails or could physically attend group meetings. Though a common discussion tool for communication was proposed and created, the members who physically attended meetings failed to update those who missed the meetings through the discussion tool. Therefore, there was poor communication within the group hence the poor functioning off the team. According to the Tuckman’s model of development , communication is vital or critical for the normal functioning of the team (Borkman). Thirdly, the poor functioning of the team was caused by the fact that some of the members of the group were isolated by the others. When the members were interviewed, it was observed that four members of the group worked hand in hand while the other three members were isolated. Therefore, the isolated individuals had divergent opinions and views regarding the project as compared to the four members who worked collectively. There are other factors that caused the poor functioning of the group. Some lf the team members were not dedicated and devoted in their work. This is attributed to the absence of three of the members hence the

Cultural Preferences and End-of-Life Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Cultural Preferences and End-of-Life Care - Essay Example This paper studies Kagawa-Singer and Blackhall’s (2001) article and directs its attention to the Chinese-American ethnic group, outlining some of the critical issues that affect the medical process based on the patient, family and the physician while monitoring the cultural beliefs, practices and values of the patient so as to ensure maximum satisfaction at the end of life. The paper also looks into the various challenges faced by professionals in palliative care with respect to cultural beliefs and the implications of these challenges to the professionals. On January 12, 2001, a perspective editor interviewed a 38-year old Chinese woman, Ms Z, who took care of her ailing mother and father with help from her elder sister (Kagawa-Singer and Blackhall, 2001). In December 1994, her mother was diagnosed with stage IIIB adenocarcinoma of the lung and underwent chemotherapies. She received constant treatment but succumbed to her end of life in January, 1996. To add to the ill-fated departure of her mother, Ms Z’s dad was diagnosed with Parkinson during the early 90s, and died in 1997 after numerous medications had been administered (Kagawa-Singer and Blackhall, 2001). According to Ms Z, the topic of her mother’s condition was never raised by any family member. In addition, her father never discussed his condition even after they had full information from the doctor (Kagawa-Singer and Blackhall, 2001). From the interview, a number of issues were of notable concern in the Chinese culture and they are addressed below: a) Informed consent – across many cultures, people do not appreciate telling the truth about diagnosis of certain diseases such as cancer, although it is part of U.S. health care. According to Ms Z, her mother’s diagnosis was given in a statistical book for her to read, and they never discussed that topic again. This is

Lockheed management Essay Example for Free

Lockheed management Essay We examined the decision to invest in the Tri-Star project by forecasting the cash flow associated with the project for a volume of 210 planes. We also asked what a valid estimate of the NPV of the Tri-Star project at a volume of 210 planes as of 1967 would be. We found this to be -$584 M. This was clearly an unacceptable NPV for capital budgeting on the project. A break-even analysis revealed that the project reached economic break-even with the production of 275 planes at . 5 M per unit but did not reach value break-even at that level of production. Despite industry analysts predicting 300 units as Lockheed’s break-even sales point, at this level, net present value remained insufficient to cover costs at negative $274 million. If the company had performed a true value break-even analysis, management would have realized that roughly 400 Tri Star aircraft (about 67 per year for six years) costing somewhere between $11.75 million and $12 million per unit would have to be sold in order to break even. The investment decision made by Lockheed to pursue the Tri Star program was not a reasonable one. A true value analysis shows that at the production level of 210 units, the project would result in an economic loss of $584.05 million and a profit loss of $480 million. In addition to miscalculating the break-even level of production, Lockheed management overestimated the growth rate of air travel industry.

A Worn Path :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A Tattered Trail   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"A Worn Path† by Eudora Welty, is the tale of the unstoppable love and care of a grandmother for her grandchild. The main character in the story, Phoenix Jackson, is an old black woman who makes a long journey into town to get medicine for her ill grandson. Despite the many obstacles Phoenix encounters along her journey, determination helps her to continue. I will analyze â€Å" A Worn Path† by Eudora Welty in terms of symbolism and characters.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First, I will analyze â€Å"A Worn Path† by Eudora Welty in terms of symbolism. One way symbolism was shown in the story was by the obstacles Phoenix encounters along her journey. The first obstacle Phoenix faces is when she gets herself tangled in a bush, and she does not want to tear her dress. Phoenix begins to take to the bush saying, â€Å"Thorns, you doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass, no sir† (Welty 389). Eventually, she frees herself from the bush. â€Å" Old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush† (Welty 389). This shows that you should not judge from the outside and that things are not always, what they seem to be. Another obstacle she faces is when she meets the barbed wire fence. She begins to speak to herself, â€Å" she could not pay for having her arm or leg sawed off if she got caught fast where she was†(Welty 390). Again, determination helps her to continue. Phoenix’s name also shows symbolism. â€Å"As Wesley 2 most critics have noted, Phoenix Jackson’s first name links her to the Egyptian myth of the bird that renews itself periodically from its own ashes†(Bartel 45). In addition, like her name, Phoenix seems ageless. When she stops to drink water from the spring she says, â€Å"Nobody know who made this well, for it was here when I was born†(Welty 391). When she encounters the hunter and he asks her how old she is she says, â€Å"There is no telling, mister, â€Å"said, â€Å"no telling† (Welty 392). Again her age is emphasized when she goes to the doctor’s office and the nurse ask her why she never went to school. â€Å"I never did go to school, I was too old at the Surrender† (Welty 394).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Secondly, I will analyze â€Å"A Worn Path†, by Eudora Welty in terms of characters. The main character in the story is Phoenix Jackson.

Ethical Implications for Human Trafficking in the United States Essay

Ethical Implications for Human Trafficking in the United States Human trafficking is a type of modern-day slavery in which millions of people, regardless of gender or age, around the world are forced into. Human trafficking is the trade of human beings for the purpose of forced labor, sexual exploitation or illegal profits and usually involves the use of violence, fraud, or coercion to recruit, hide, and transport people illegally (Act Now). According to the United Nations is both a definition of human trafficking is â€Å"The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude, or the removal of organs. † (UNICEF) The traffickers use different types of strategies to exploit the â€Å"slaves†. There are two types of slavery: those who are forced to work for money and those who are kidnapped and forced to work for food (â€Å"Human Trafficking†). Trafficking primary involves exploitation which comes in many forms such as forcing victims into prostitution, subjecting victims to slavery or involuntary servitude, compelling victims to commit sexual acts for the purpose of creating pornography and misleading victims into debt bondage (Do Something). Of the 27 million slaves around the world, 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation, and 19% involves labor exploitation (Do Something). Many of the people who are victims of human trafficking are people who voluntarily enter the business but under false pretenses. These people leave their homes in order to change their quality of life but many of the times they are lied to about the conditions of the work they are intended to do. Due to monetary problems or joblessness, people try to find better opportunities out of the country. Poverty is a huge contributor to human trafficking as well. Mostly in third world countries and sometimes in second world counties, family members will sell females and children for cash. Females can cost around US$100-2,500 depending on the country, the age of the female and if she has had a child or not (PBS). Then they must work off the debt they accumulate, which includes costs of food, shelter, and other expenses with interest which can take years to settle. Homeless children or children who come from broken families are more susceptible to the sex industry to survive economically. These innocent victims put their trust on â€Å"manager† or the â€Å"middle man† who promise them a higher paying job in a better area. Many women leave their homes in order to find better opportunities for a high paying job for their family but when they arrive to the new city, they are forced into an exploitative job. They way human traffickers secure the â€Å"slaves† is by making them dependant on them by taking their passport away, making them into drug addicts and with emotional and physical abuse. Although 110 countries have signed and approved the document, implanting the policies and law proves most difficult. The challenge lies in targeting all the criminals who target innocent and vulnerable people who organize the human trafficking ring. In March 2007, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) formally launched a Global Initiative to fight Human Trafficking meaning they will help draft laws and help implement policies against human trafficking. The biggest international milestone to date has been the adoption of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women, and Children (Act Now). The reason why it is so difficult to eradicate human trafficking is due to economical reasons. In economic terms, by increasing the amount of product in the most cost effect manner, the cheaper the product which is favorable for all consumers. However, putting it in simpler worlds, to provide lower prices for consumers, human traffickers reduce the cost of production by providing cheap labor to the factories. In order to find a better opportunity for their life, many people are being trafficked voluntarily. This means that they sign an â€Å"indentured servitude† agreement in which they are smuggled from one country into another. Even though this is illegal and exploitative, it allows people to move to a place that might have more resources to sustain them, which could balance the burden of human population. Because human trafficking allows some companies to produce goods and services at a lower cost, the other companies that compete legally will have to innovate and improve their businesses to stay competitive. Meaning human trafficking encourages the development of more efficient and innovative technology by providing cheap labor. Human trafficking dehumanizes the victims and rewards the perpetrators. With 50% of all slaves are under the age of 18 years, two thirds of them suffer from physical abuse from their handlers and it affects them in the long run (Do Something). They are more likely to develop metal health problems, engage in substance abuse, engage in prostitution and either commit, or be a victim of violent crimes (Do Something). We may think that things like this could never occur where we live but Orlando is the perfect example of how human trafficking in everywhere. According to Giselle Fernandez of the Coalition Against Human Trafficking, Florida is the number two destination for human trafficking due to the theme parks. Many of the girls work at the hotels, become prostitutes or end up in pornography. In order to prevent such a heinous crime, females must be educated so they are less susceptible to false hopes. Increasing police pay in certain destination areas so they are less likely to be bribed by traffickers. Only with efforts from the government, private companies, and especially communities will we be able to eradicate human trafficking.

The Case of Nathaniel Wu

The Case of Nathaniel Wu The case of Nathaniel Wu deals with discrimination against a man’s career, because of a very serious potential health problem. As part of the application process Nathaniel submitted a blood sample, which revealed Nathaniel had the allele for Huntington disease. Nathaniel’s case involves the questioning of ethics. Should Nathaniel be recommended or not. Nathaniel exhibits many positive aspects that could contribute to IPC. Nathaniel Wu is a top-notch microbiologist, who has spent several years working in one of the best research laboratories in the world. Therefore, Nathaniel appears to be well qualified for the job at Intercontinental Pharmaceutical Corporation of New Jersey. Not only is Nathaniel well qualified, Dr. Peters even states that the other three applicants did not seem to share the same determination and drive as Nathaniel Wu. Therefore, it is evident that Nathaniel Wu would be a great asset for the company. Nathaniel not only met the criteria, he also gave an impressive first impression, his knowledge and research skills, portrayed that he is the type of applicant who could have a long and productive career, and seemed to be the sort of team player IPC was seeking. Also, we cannot predict the precise age of the onset of disease. Although, Nathaniel has already lived 30 years without any symptoms, he has approximately a 60 percent chance of onset by age 40. However, there is a 10 year or more gap in which Nathaniel can and will be effective. Another positive of hiring Nathaniel is the likelihood of his research resulting in new discoveries of drugs and treatments. The company would definitely benefit from his discoveries, because the new products could improve the quality of life for countless individuals and dramatically increase the earnings for IPC.Cons for hiring Nathaniel. Nathaniel’s potential health problem is incurable and fatal, with death commonly occurring in the patients 50s. Another negative si de to hiring Nathaniel is that once he develops the symptoms, large sums of money would be needed for his medical and other costs such as disability insurance. Also soon after the onset of symptoms, a person with Huntington disease becomes unable to perform safely or productively in a laboratory setting. The disease also occurs between ages 35 to 45; therefore, Nathaniel could at most be effective for 15 years, and at least 5 years. And even before Nathaniel becomes unable to work, he will be dealing with personality changes, including inappropriate laughter, crying, memory loss, and etc. I believe that even with Nathaniel’s condition, he should be hired. Nathaniel is a productive scientist and could be for many years. He would also be an advantage for IPC in the tough and competitive world of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Ethically Nathaniel should not be seen differently become of his condition. And based on well-reasoned arguments you can conclude that Nathaniel is the best applicant for the job.

Rational self determination Essay Example

Rational self determination Essay Example Rational self determination Essay Rational self determination Essay Name: Course: Institution: Date: Rational Self Determination The positive concepts surrounding autonomy involves complying with the ethical principles in which a person recommends for himself. This means that the liberty found in one’s will is based on the acquired independence. The will is termed as liberal since it is not established using external factors and hence becomes defined by internal factors. For example, an individual with independence can give him the liberty in decision-making and hence one’s personal understanding becomes the evaluating factor of what is ethical or unethical. The concept of autonomy is similar to that of rational self-determination, where rationality is perceived in its constricted logic. The significance of autonomy in individuals can therefore, be used as a means to show the relevance of rational self-determination. The act of becoming rational involves a person having the ability to make sound choices independently. However, self-determination involves making personal or individual choices on thinking, behaving or doing something in a particular manner. For example, a teenage girl can decide to take a pregnancy test without confiding or checking with any person. However, in rational self-determination, an individual is required to have a sound or logic purpose and be alert of the logic behind his determination when making the personal decisions. The connection between self-determination and independence brings in the significance of rational self-determination through representing the liberty of will. The significance is drawn from the benefits obtained from free will including the freedom to make decisions without hindrance from limitations set in a particular environment. The liberation is significant for identifying and analyzing the origin of the system involving people’s beliefs. It is essential to establish why an individual possesses certain desires and the means in which he allows or refutes their mode of origination. As a result, the basis on which personal decisions are made is well comprehended. Freedom in the place of rational self-determination alerts the individual on his reasons for deciding to act or behave in a particular manner. The individual is able to comprehend that he must have certain grounds for doing certain actions alongside the desires he possesses that are autonomously identified from his known wants and inclinations. Rationalized self-determination is very significant especially in developing certain significant skills required in an individual. This is because it involves applying abilities such as boldness, originality, self-advocacy and decision-making in daily life experiences. Self-determination is witnessed when a person takes control or responsibility of her own life. In this case, a person should be acquainted with setting goals, evaluating alternatives and making sound decisions. Although this process can appear as difficult for beginners, growth eventually takes place through learning and practicing the required skills. The view of rational self-determination where people are expected to base their decisions on logical grounds minimizes the cases of unsolvable inconsistencies. In addition, people develop honest attempts in perceiving things from views of other people. Autonomy is considered important because it gives people free will in making judgments in various situations. However, it is important to restrict that freedom when based on rationality since a society developed with irrationality could lead to individuals suffering greater consequences in the future.

When To Use Time Sensitive Salutations [Etiquette Mistakes]

When To Use Time Sensitive Salutations [Etiquette Mistakes] Two participants in our Effective Business Writing courserecentlyquestioned why using â€Å"Good Evening† was not best practice for an email salutation. We always want to engage our reader, and shape any document, including email, from our reader’s perspective, not our perspective. With email, when the recipient is likely to read the email is more relevant than when we send it. Good Evening Email Etiquette For example, if you work in London and send an email off at 9:00 P.M. to a colleague or customer in Los Angeles, the recipient would receive it 1:00 P.M. Los Angeles time. If the first words your recipient reads are â€Å"Good Evening† while he or she sees the sun shining and is midway through the work day, it fosters reader disconnect. If you do not know when your reader is going to read your email message, choose a time-neutral salutation: Dear, Hello, Hi – choosing whichever best matches the relationship and purpose of your email. (More on appropriatebusiness email salutions.) Using the salutation â€Å"Good Morning† can be particularly warm and engaging, if you are certain your reader will receive your message in the morning. For example, you have a phone conversation with your reader in the morning (reader time zone), and promise to email a document right after you conclude the call. In this case, â€Å"Good Morning† is a great salutation because it enhances the connection because it is immediate and warm and reader-focused. This same thought process should apply to description of your activities. My friend, based in Seattle, recently shared that she was momentarily concerned when her colleague, based in Glasgow, sent an email to her that began â€Å"I’m savoring a single malt and reading your proposal†¦Ã¢â‚¬ It was 6:00 P.M. in Glasgow, so a single malt was well deserved and in order, but it was a little jarring at first read for my friend in Seattle, who was sipping morning coffee at 10:00 A.M. Of course, any reader will understand with brief reflection, but we don’t want to require reflection or questioning. We want to engage our readers right away. Reader-focused writing requires that we keep content, organization and tone on our reader, not on our own thoughts. Good Night Use â€Å"Good Morning† and â€Å"Good Night† with care – they are engaging when you know your reader will read them at the right time, but will wedge an intimation of lack of awareness for your reader if you miss the time mark.
